Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When is a good time to seek therapy?

A: It’s a good time to start when you are feeling stuck in your life, but haven’t reached a stage of crisis. While we  can certainly help during a crisis, it’s ideal to start before you get to this point.

Q: I’ve wanted to try therapy, but I don’t want to delve too much into my past.

A: No therapy is one-size-fits all. Many people start out with an idea of how it will go, and this evolves over time. We will work at a level at which you feel comfortable.  And for all of our patients, we offer many practical, hands-on techniques that can help you in daily life.

Q: How do I know if we’ll be a good match?

A: We will happy to talk to you over the phone or set up an initial consultation. After the consultation, we can decide if it’s a good fit. If your issue is outside of my range of our experience and expertise, we will help you find a more appropriate therapist.

Q: What is therapy like?

A: Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therapy will be different depending on the individual.  In general, you can expect to discuss the current events happening in your life, your personal history relevant to your issue, and report progress (or any new insights gained) from the previous therapy session.Depending on your specific needs, therapy can be short-term, for a specific issue, or longer-term, to deal with more difficult patterns or your desire for more personal development.

Q: Does what we talk about in therapy remain confidential?

A: Confidentiality is one of the most important components between a client and counselor. Successful therapy requires a high degree of trust with highly sensitive subject matter that is usually not discussed anywhere but the counselor's office. Every counselor will provide a written copy of their confidential disclosure agreement, and you can expect that what you discuss in session will not be shared with anyone.  This is called “Informed Consent”. However, state law and professional ethics require counselors to maintain confidentiality except for the following situations, which the counselor will go over with you upon your initial session.
